So, you know and I know that this is a food blog, right?
Which means I post recipes for you all and then I cross my fingers and hope that you love the food and that your family and friends call you super cook of the universe.
That is my goal, plain and simple.
But today is Saturday and you might have some family and friends near by that want to hang out together and have a bit of fun. So that's what I have for you. A recipe for fun!
My family and I have been playing Speed Scrabble a lot since the holidays, and it is really a ton of fun (and a little bit addicting :) It's kind of like playing Words With Friends, except you play with real friends who are living and breathing and sitting next to you. You don't have to know a lot of big fancy words, simple three letter words work well. Which is lucky for me, my simple mind and my hideous spelling skills. The game is great for a small number of players or for a large group. Kids can participate and so can great grandmothers. All you need are a couple of boxes of Scrabble, a handful of players and a table. Pretty simple, right?
Because I love ya, and I love to pass on a fun thing or two to you wonderful readers...I picked up a couple of Scrabble Board Games for one of you!
To enter the giveaway leave me a comment telling me one of your favorite games. You know...like Monopoly, or Canasta
Now....let me show you how to play!
HOW TO PLAY SPEED SCRABBLE
You will need...
2-12 players (ages 8-88)
2 Scrabble Board Games
Pour out all of the wooden tiles into the middle of large table and lay them face down.
Each player chooses out 10 tiles, keeping them face down.
When all players are ready, someone says "GO!". Everyone turns over their tiles
and begins to build the letters into words, connecting the words to each other. Words can be spelled across and down. No proper nouns, contractions or abbreviations, please.
When one player has used up all of his or her tiles they shout "Draw"! All players choose two more tiles from the center of the table
and work to use them in their word puzzle.
When the tiles from the middle of the table have all been drawn, the first player to use all of their tiles shouts "Done" and then all word building stops. Points are scored by adding up the numbers on the tiles both across and down, making letters that have been used twice worth double the points. (Note that the X above is equal to 8 points. It will count for 8 points going across and 8 points going down.) Players who have tiles that aren't used in their puzzle have to subtract those points from their score.
Tiles that are blank count as what ever letter you have used them for. The blank tile above was used as a Z, which is worth ten points. Since it has been used twice it counts for twenty in this puzzle.
The player with the highest score wins.
That's it! Hope you enjoy it (and I hope the instructions make sense)! Thanks so much for dropping by today. See you Monday morning with a brand new recipe.

I love Scrabble! Word games are so much fun :)
ReplyDeleteJust started playing Words with Friends. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI love Upwords and Madgab is a good one too.
ReplyDeleteMY kids and I love to play quirkle. It is a game where even my 5 year old could play with us but it is not considered a "kids game" (which can get tiring after a while)
ReplyDeleteI love games! We really love Apples to Apples right now, as well as Would You Rather. But the little ones are keeping busy as we speak by playing Candyland with their older sisters! Such fun!
ReplyDeleteI like "42" and love any word games....seriously. My hubby thinks I'm crazy. Thanks for this....just might have to make a dash and get a couple of scrabbles. Would be nice if you could find garage sale ones...hmmmmm that's a thought.

DeleteThe above game is almost exactly like the game BANANAGRAMS that is out. It is just the tiles in a banana cloth case. And it should be under $20.
We play Candyland and Dominoes with the kids. My husband and I enjoy playing Trains or just about any card game.
ReplyDeleteI love playing the game of things. But I'd really love to try scrabble
ReplyDeleteLove this and all speed games. lol. competitive? me?
ReplyDeleteI love Boggle and Scrabble!! We don't have either so this would be awesome!!
ReplyDeleteOur family loves UNO!!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite card game is SPIT. Fast and simple.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like more fun than the traditional Scrabble; it would go faster.
ReplyDeleteIt was family tradition to be inducted in to the canasta club at age 8. I love playing with my aunties. My newest game obsession, if you will call it that, is Ticket to Ride.
ReplyDeletemy husband and I love to play double salitare (the faster the better) and scrunch with friends.
ReplyDeleteRight now, we are enjoying Sorry Sliders. I love any game that gets the family together around the table.
ReplyDeleteJackie
boggle
ReplyDeleteI love Speed Scrabble! Another one we've gotten into lately is Settlers of Catan.

ReplyDeleteI tend to change favorites every now and again. Right now, I'm loving Milles Bornes.
ReplyDeleteWe try to do a "family game night" once a week and my kids love Monopoly and Scene-It!
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh this looks like so much fun! I had never heard of speed scrabble. My teenage boys love playing scrabble with their grandparents. Some good memories being made there! We definitely love game night at our house...settlers of catan, cities and nights, parchessi, monopoly, uno and the list goes on an on!
ReplyDeleteSide note...made your bourbon chicken the other night and it was thumbs up by all! Hard to do with my picky family. Thanks!
We play speed scrabble a lot but I would love to have some tiles dedicated to this instead of raiding the real scrabble box! I also like rummikub!
ReplyDeleteI hardly have any games :>( I would LOVE to have this and invite some people over and play. I think that the last game I played was Mexican Dominos or fish !
ReplyDeletedenisecott@yahoo.com
Right now I am an Othello fan. WAY fun! Sequence is pretty fun, too. And Memory, Go Fish, Disney Sorry...... :)
ReplyDeleteI want this game! We love The Great Dalmuti and Uno at this house!
ReplyDeleteI still love the game of Life. I think it is a lot of fun even if my husband and I get different numbers of kids. Thanks for the chance to enter.

I love to play a game called Tripoli. My father taught us how to play this growing up, and it was so fun. He had a huge bag of pennies and would give everyone an equal pile of them to play with. After the game was over, they would return them to him - so even though it was gambling, nobody won or lost money. That game always reminds me of rainy days at the lakehouse.
ReplyDeleteI love Phase 10!! It takes forever, but so much fun and we laugh until our sides hurt!! I enjoy playing Battleship with my son....we like to make the explosion sounds when we hit a ship and then giggle we the other person misses!!LOL I have wanted to try Scrabble with him, he's 8 and I think it would be a great skill builder for him!! Thanks for being so thoughtful and wanting to give something away!! I love your recipes...made 2 this week and I heading to the kitchen to try Quinoa for the first time!!
ReplyDeleteWe just got Would You Rather for Christmas and have had a lot of fun with it. Another one we like is Blokus. I would love to play this Scrabble game!
ReplyDeleteMy sister-in-law taught this to me a long time ago, but I couldn't remember how to play. I'm so glad you reminded me.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite game is probably Apples to Apples, but Things is also pretty great.
Our family loves Apples to Apples! Our favorite for holidays!

We love to play Apples To Apples & have got both sides of our families hooked on it. :) Would love to try the Speed Scrabble game! :)
ReplyDeleteI've always loved Tripoli. As a child on Saturday nights we would all gather at the dining room table to play. My dad would bring out lots of pennies for us to play with. We would always give the money back but it was fun winning piles of money. We also made homemade pizza. ciao4now64@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteJamie, I wouldn't know what game to call my favorite. My husband and I have been collecting tons over our 35 years of marriage. Our youngest daughter and her hubby just spent a week's vacation here with us and she dug out MASTERPIECE for us to play (and took back to Texas with her) because it was an old childhood memory of fun and he'd never heard of it. She and her dad play Scrabble online daily. Have to say, I've never heard of Speed Scrabble, so I'm anxious to show him and see if we can try something new!! Please don't include me in the draw -- we have a closet full of games. Some of you newbies need to start your collections! Love this blog -- just found it this week on Pinterest (I'm hooked!) :)
ReplyDeleteWe love to play mexican train dominoes. Our family night is every Tuesday and I prepare a special dessert just for that evening. I have played dominoes since I was a little girl. It is a game played "religiously" in the Caribbean, where I am from. I'm glad my family loves to play this and choose it over any other.
ReplyDeleteOur grandchildren love playing Scattergories and Apples to Apples with us. My daughters have so much fun playing Rummikub. Thanks for the new idea for Scrabble!
ReplyDeleteWe love to play the Monopoly Deal card game, my 6 yr old beats me regularly. Also, Settlers of Catan.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE scrabble! My playing buddy of the past is now on so many meds, that I can't play any more. I did the online thing for a while but tired of that. My family doesnt like to play the traditional scrabble with me cause I whoop 'em bad!!!! So this speed game sounds like a great equalizer.
ReplyDeleteWhen my daughters are home we play Skip Bo like crazy...when someone wins consistantly she is named the SKip Bo Ho LOL! Fun! I love games!
Mexican Train is one of our favorite games. Although Candyland is a big hit with the grand kids
ReplyDeleteI think yesterday I played Sorry 7 times with my 6yr. old and he beat me 5 times! It would be nice to have a new game.
ReplyDeleteI love to play Base 10, although tiring when it goes on forever. A faster game like Speed Scrabble would be fun!
ReplyDeletegjretired at hotmail.com
Our family game is SCRABBLE! I have been playing with my mom since I was 7. 35 years later, we still play once a week. She says it keeps her sharp. Can't wait to show her and the kids your new game, Speed SRABBLE!
ReplyDeleteI have to say that canasta, phase 10 and scrabble are my favorite games. I learned canasta recently and I just can't quit playing (although I lose frequently!). Scrabble is probably our favorite family game. My husband, his mom, and I play all the time!
ReplyDeletekat_ofthe_night@yahoo.com
This looks fun! We've been enjoying Scrabble Slam (card game). Another favorite is PayDay and we also really like the game Doodle Dice...I could go on and on and on...we love games. We also got Buzz Word for Christmas & it's been a lot of fun too!
ReplyDeletewe love Mexican Train Dominoes.
ReplyDeleteHedbanz, Boggle, Apples to Apples, Catch Phrase. All great family/group games!
ReplyDeleteThe newest one we love as a family is 'Say Anything'. It was hard to find and we finally bought it online. Even kids can be a part of this game and we got a lot of good laughs during our Christmas game time. Our poor Scrabble game is almost 40 years old so the box is in sorry, taped-up shape but the game itself looks great.
ReplyDeleteI love Scrabble!!! We also like to play Settlers of Catan and Farmopoly. Thanks for the fun giveaway. I'm excited to try Speed Scrabble! :)
ReplyDeleteMy family and I love to play Pente
ReplyDeleteI love a little good game competition! We have been playing a lot of Apples to Apples and Imagine If lately! I played speed scrabble recently at a friend's house and thought it was super fun!
ReplyDeleteI love Scrabble. It's always been one of my favorites. My sisters and I also love to play a card game called "Boss". It's so much fun!
ReplyDeleteWe love Risk and The Farming Game. Would love to try speed scrabble. Sounds so much fun
ReplyDeleteThe grandkids and I like to play any card game like fish old maid. lunylinda@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteMy favorite game in the world is Euchre, played it with my granparents and parents and college friends. It's a card game that no one plays here in the South. My family here loves Uno
ReplyDeleteI love Pictionary. It's amazing how the simplicity of children's drawings are easier to guess than the adult drawings.
ReplyDeleteIt's a toss up between Life or Scrabble!
ReplyDeleteHate Speed Scrabble! You know who I am!!!:) We will NOT be playing it at my house tonight! It's just me though. Everyone else seems to like that dumb game!
ReplyDeleteOur family loves scrabble, but I've never tried speed scrabble. Looks like a lot of fun.
ReplyDeleteOur favorite family game is, Sorry!
ReplyDeletelizluscomb@live.com
Hey this is just like our fav game...BananaGrams.....
ReplyDeletehttp://www.amazon.com/Bananagrams-BAN001/dp/1932188126/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326580050&sr=8-1.
My new favorite game is a card game I can play with my 4yr old - Blink.
ReplyDeleteI love playing Yahtzee or any kind of card game. My husband and I have a game of Words with Friends constantly going. I keep saying I need to buy a real Scrabble board.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip. Love new 'wordy' things. Q’s without U’s rock! Qi, Qat, Qaid and Qanat. Another great skill-builder is unscrambling anagrams to make words from a jumble of letters. If you like TV trivia and anagrams, my blog is fun and good practice for Speed Scrabble. Let me know what you think of it.
ReplyDeleteLeona
I love to play dominoes with my husband. When the kids were home we loved to play Sorry and Uno. As a girl I loved Monopoly, the game of Life & Clue. Thanks for the chance to win.

ReplyDeletemfreeman@ne.rr.com
I've always liked the game of Life.
ReplyDeleteLove these games almost as much as I love your blog. I know if we ever met we would be instant friends. Would love to try Speed Scrabble.
ReplyDeleteWe actually have a game just like this, it is called "Bananagrams". LOVE it!! One more rule it has is, if there are still tiles in the middle and you have tiles you can't use yourself then you take it and put it back in the middle, then take two new ones. At the end the first one out of tiles wins. Counting the points sound fun!
ReplyDeleteOver the holidays we played "What?", it is made by the Apples to Apples game and is a fun twist to it. Love playing games with family.
I'm a new reader of your blog :-) I LOVE Scrabble, but when I was younger I loved Candy Land, Chutes and Ladders and Clue!

ReplyDeleteWhen our family gathers at the lake for vacation ..well, the "scrabble board table" is rarely vacant..this post gave me a new idea for our group and I can't wait to try it ...thanks : )
ReplyDeleteVacation at lake is only 147 days away..woohoo!!
We love to play Uno Robot at my house. My kids got it for Christmas and it's alot of fun! We also love In A Pickle. It's a great game to play with friends.

ReplyDeleteOur family like any kind of card game: phase 10, Uno, etc.
ReplyDeleteOur favorite game is Settlers of Catan.
ReplyDeleteFor family fun time, we love Apples to Apples. The kids usually win.
ReplyDeleteWe love to play Sedarahc...Charades backwards!
ReplyDeleteWe got a new one for Christmas called You've Been Sentenced....so much fun, hilarious, and my kids had a BLAST! especially because they trounced their dad (for whom English is a second language). You have 10 pentagon shaped cards and each card has a word (or phrase) and variations on each of the 5 sides (choice, chose, choose, choosing, made the choice). You have to use as many of the 10 cards as you can to make a grammatically correct sentence...which results in lots of ridiculously silly fun.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to WIN! I love playing games with my fam!
Catch Phrase is probably my favorite game, although there are so many fun games.
ReplyDeleteThe most played game in our house right now is Princess Memory :)
ReplyDeleteshakenafist at yahoo dot com
Our family loves playing Settlers of Catan. My son just gave the family the Knights and Barbarians expansion for Christmas. Even with older kids we still manage to have a game night at least once a week.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Funglish. It is indeed a fun game which we play pretty often with our friends since our kiddo (the only one so far) is only 2 years old he can't joint us yet.
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE Dutch Blitz! You have to try it. -thesteady5@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try some of the games your readers suggest - they sound like fun! My daughter and I are hooked on "Trouble" - we have been playing every day. There's nothing like a popomatic dice roller! :)
ReplyDeleteHand and foot or canasta as some people call it. Great for when all my siblings and their spouses get together.
ReplyDeleteWell, with 128 comments, I'm sure I won't win, but here goes. I LOVE to play Scrabble. I have the Deluxe Edition, with the spinning tray. It's killer. AND I love Blokus. Also a favorite.
